Pakistani forces and Afghan Taliban personnel exchanged fire near Pakistanโs Kurram district and Afghanistanโs Paktia province on October 17, according to reports from Afghanistan International and Dawn. Afghanistan International, citing local sources, placed clashes in Dand Wa Patan, opposite Kurram, and said the trigger was unknown. Dawn relayed Pakistani state-media accounts that fighting was still underway when its report was published.
Pakistanโs state-run Radio Pakistan said security sources accused Afghan Taliban personnel of firing in Taldah sector to facilitate terrorists and claimed Pakistani forces destroyed several Taliban posts. Dawn separately relayed a Pakistani-source claim that Afghan Taliban personnel were killed near Ghuzgarhi. These reported deaths and damage have not been independently confirmed, and the accounts do not establish who started the exchange or provide a verified casualty toll.
The reports did not establish whether fighting continued after Dawnโs account. Separately, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said on October 1 that it had documented more than 1,100 civilian deaths and injuries in Afghanistan from cross-border armed violence so far in 2026; that cumulative figure is not specific to the October 17 exchange.
