City Councilmember Nithya Raman defeated incumbent Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayoral race, the Associated Press reported Thursday. Bass said she called Raman to congratulate her and pledged a smooth transition.
The result replaces the incumbent in the nation's second-largest city. Raman and Bass are both Democrats in a nonpartisan municipal election, so the change in mayor does not represent a party flip.
