Murrill indictment pauses after Supreme Court stay
New Orleans LA – A grand jury indictment against Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill is on hold after the Louisiana Supreme Court issued a stay and sent the matter back for motions.
A New Orleans grand jury handed up a 16-count indictment against Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill on July 2, and the Louisiana Supreme Court issued a stay the next day. For now, the case is paused, not resolved.
The court’s per curiam order said the matter is stayed and remanded so Murrill can file defensive pleadings, including motions to quash. It also left room for responses and recusal motions.
Why New Orleans is the center of the dispute
The indictment came out of Orleans Parish Criminal District Court and grew from a fight over New Orleans court structure, including state changes to the clerk of court office. AP reported that the charges stem from accusations that Murrill threatened the jobs of New Orleans officials, while Verite News said the letters at issue went to Mayor Helena Moreno, District Attorney Jason Williams, and council members.
For New Orleans readers, the immediate question is whether defense filings can narrow or dismiss the case before it moves further in Orleans Parish.
