AISD delays most boundary changes to 2028-29, splits plan into two phases
Austin TX – Austin ISD has pushed districtwide boundary changes to 2028-29 and set a smaller first phase for urgent 2027-28 changes, including Marshall Middle School.
After receiving more than 2,750 comments, Austin ISD has pushed its comprehensive districtwide boundary realignment to the 2028-29 school year and split the work into two phases. The district said the extra time should help it make more sustainable long-term decisions while it works through budget pressure, staffing, academic visioning and enrollment shifts after recent consolidations.
This is still a process update, not a final rezoning decision. For the 2027-28 school year, AISD said it will move ahead with a reduced set of required changes for campuses affected by recent closures or schools projected to be so crowded they would need portables the district says it cannot afford. The first phase will also define an attendance area for Marshall Middle School.
What happens first
AISD said it will share a refined update in July 2026, release draft recommended changes by Aug. 7 and ask the Board of Trustees to vote on the reduced-scope plan in September. If approved, those changes would take effect in fall 2027.
Why the district bought more time
The district said the longer timeline will let staff monitor enrollment trends after recent closures, review October enrollment data and continue academic planning. AISD also said it wants future engagement to happen during the school year, when more families can participate.
The broader districtwide phase will formally begin in January 2027 and could still include feeder-pattern changes and possible school consolidations. AISD said it will share a new planning rubric and refined timeline in fall 2026, with a board vote on the larger plan expected in fall 2027.
What families should watch
For now, most attendance zones are unchanged. But families near campuses affected by the 2025-26 consolidation cycle, and parents tied to Marshall Middle School, should pay close attention to the July, August and September deadlines.
For Austin families, the main takeaway is simple: the boundary fight is not over, but the biggest changes have been pushed later.
