Ankeny-area fuel check: gas eases to $3.875, diesel stays near $4.90

Regular gasoline and diesel are moving in different directions around Ankeny. In its August 1, 2026, check, AAA listed the Des Moines metro average at $3.875 per gallon for regular gasoline and $4.904 per gallon for diesel.

Those are metro averages that provide context for the Ankeny-area market. They are not a station-by-station average for every pump in Ankeny, where prices can vary by location, competition and timing.

Gasoline is slightly lower for the day, but higher over longer periods

The Des Moines metro regular-gas average fell 0.7 cents from the previous day’s $3.882. The daily decline was small compared with the longer-term increases: the average was 8.8 cents higher than a week earlier, 31.4 cents higher than a month earlier and 87.5 cents higher than a year earlier.

For Ankeny commuters and households, that means the latest check offers only limited daily relief. A full tank can still cost more than it did at the same points last week, last month or last year.

Diesel remains near $4.90

Diesel was nearly flat in the same AAA check, slipping 0.2 cents from $4.906 the previous day. It was also down 10.6 cents from a week earlier.

The longer comparisons remain much higher. Diesel was 86.3 cents above its month-ago average and $1.257 above its year-ago average. The weekly decline therefore does not mean diesel has become inexpensive for people and businesses that depend on it.

That matters for contractors, delivery drivers, farmers and service companies using diesel-powered vehicles or equipment. Higher fuel costs can also affect route expenses, deliveries and operating budgets for restaurants and other businesses.

Metro prices were below the latest Midwest benchmark

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 28 update, based on July 27 data, put the Midwest average at $3.882 for regular gasoline and $5.196 for on-highway diesel. The national averages were $4.096 for gasoline and $5.313 for diesel.

Those EIA figures are older than AAA’s August 1 metro check, so they provide broader regional and national context rather than a newer local snapshot. On that comparison, the Des Moines metro average was slightly below the Midwest gasoline figure and below the Midwest diesel figure.

What the split trend means for Ankeny budgets

Gasoline’s higher weekly, monthly and yearly comparisons can add pressure to commuter and household budgets even after a small one-day decline. Diesel’s lower weekly price may provide some short-term relief for contractors, delivery operators, farmers and service businesses, but its much higher monthly and yearly comparisons remain important for planning.

Weekend travelers may also notice the difference over a full tank or across several vehicles. Because metro averages do not show every Ankeny pump, shoppers may find prices above or below the AAA figure locally.
