Cape Coral Daily Brief: Brush Fire Update, Traffic-Calming Moves, and City Hall Decorum
Cape Coral, FL – March 3, 2026 – Brush fire update, council weighs traffic calming options, and meeting decorum tweaks plus a key road closure.
Brush fire: illegal campfire blamed
Fire crews say a brush fire that sent smoke across parts of Cape Coral on Saturday, Feb. 28 burned about 36 acres near Del Prado Boulevard and Kismet Parkway. Officials reported the fire was largely contained by late Saturday, with crews continuing to watch for hot spots.
Investigators said an illegal campfire sparked the blaze. With a countywide burn ban in place, officials reiterated that open flames can quickly become dangerous in the current dry conditions.
Neighborhood safety: traffic-calming plan stays in-house
City leaders are asking staff to return with examples of residential traffic-calming policies, rather than hiring an outside consultant. The discussion follows a year of resident frustration over speeding, with city staff reporting more than 160 speed-related complaints.
The direction from council was to look at models already used elsewhere and bring back options that Cape Coral could adapt. Funding and implementation details are expected to be part of the next round of conversations, especially around what measures would be effective and how requests would be prioritized.
City Hall decorum: limited clapping may be codified
After a workshop discussion about meeting rules, council signaled support for allowing applause during formal recognitions and awards, while keeping restrictions in place during other portions of meetings. A proposal to also allow clapping during citizen input did not pass in a split vote.
Roads: early-week crash closure noted
Drivers saw delays Monday morning after a crash temporarily closed eastbound Pine Island Road at Nicholas Parkway. If you commute through that corridor, keep an eye out for short-notice lane closures and consider alternate routes when incidents pop up.
