Cape Coral daily brief: fatal DUI case, charter changes, and a hospital milestone
Cape Coral, FL – February 26, 2026 – A fatal DUI case moves forward, council debates charter tweaks, and Cape Coral Hospital earns a nursing honor.
Top story: Fatal crash case
Cape Coral police say a driver was arrested on DUI manslaughter and related charges after a late-night crash on Beach Parkway West that left an adult woman dead and sent another adult to the hospital with serious injuries. Investigators said the call came in around 1:05 a.m. on Feb. 22, and that a child in the other vehicle was also evaluated. The case remains under investigation as it moves through the court process, with additional findings expected to be reviewed by prosecutors.
City Hall: Charter changes in the works
City Council members are continuing to shape proposed charter amendments that could appear on a future ballot. Among the items discussed: tightening district residency requirements for council candidates, requiring sworn residency statements and documents, and clarifying when an elected official could forfeit office after missing consecutive noticed meetings. The draft language is being reviewed alongside the Charter Review Commission recommendations, and the next steps run through public meetings and formal votes.
Health: A nursing excellence milestone
Cape Coral Hospital has been recognized with Magnet designation, a national credentialing program that highlights sustained nursing excellence and patient-care standards. The designation is awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and the announcement places Cape Coral Hospital among a smaller group of hospitals nationwide that meet the program’s benchmarks.
On the calendar
A local nonprofit fashion show benefiting the Special Populations Center is scheduled for March 14 at The Westin Resort and Convention Center in Cape Coral. Organizers say the event includes a luncheon, auctions, raffles, and runway time for program participants, with proceeds supporting scholarships and daily program needs.
