Cape Coral Daily Local Headlines: Manatees, Bridge Delays, and a Distracted-Driving Crackdown
Cape Coral, FL – March 4, 2026 – Manatee deaths surge in Lee County, Pine Island Bridge traffic pauses, and police cite 78 in distracted-driving blitz.
Wildlife watch: Manatee deaths climb in Lee County
State wildlife officials say another 15 manatee deaths have been documented in Lee County, following a larger cold-stress mortality event reported last week. While many of the recent deaths are suspected to be cold-related, at least one was tied to a watercraft collision, reinforcing calls for boaters to slow down and stay alert in canals, rivers, and near warm-water refuges.
Officials also reported additional rescues and rehabilitation efforts, as crews continue monitoring conditions across the region.
Roads: Intermittent stops begin on the Little Pine Island Bridge
Drivers heading toward Pine Island should plan for periodic full stops starting 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 4, as crews move heavy equipment and perform concrete work on the Little Pine Island Bridge. Flaggers will be on site, but backups are expected—especially during peak travel windows.
If you have flexibility, consider shifting trips outside the busiest hours and building extra time into commutes.
Public safety: Citywide distracted-driving enforcement nets 78 citations
Cape Coral Police reported a March 2 traffic saturation effort focused on distracted driving. Police logged 84 traffic stops and issued 78 citations, including 34 specifically for distracted driving, plus additional moving and non-moving violations.
The department said the operation paired enforcement with education and was supported through state traffic-safety grant funding.
Skywatch: Total lunar eclipse put on a Gulf Coast show
Early Tuesday morning, March 3, Southwest Florida caught a total lunar eclipse, with peak viewing around sunrise. Coastal viewpoints and darker inland areas offered the best chance to see the moon shift to a deep red before it set.
