Chula Vista Supportive-Housing Proposal Seeks $20 Million Homekey+ Grant

San Diego County is pursuing $20 million in California Homekey+ funding for Paseo del Rey, a proposed 96-unit supportive-housing development at 610 Paseo Del Rey in Chula Vista.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors took the funding action in June 2026, and the county updated its account on July 1. The county is applying with Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation. The $20 million has not been awarded, so the project remains dependent on the state funding process and additional project steps.

Proposed project would include 96 units

County and city records describe Paseo del Rey as a 96-unit development consisting of 95 affordable units and one manager’s unit. City records identify the site as 610 Paseo Del Rey.

The affordable units are intended to serve households at a range of income levels. County materials describe the supportive-housing purpose as serving veterans and people experiencing mental health or substance-use challenges. That description does not mean every future resident would be a veteran or have the same support needs.

Local housing funds are already committed

Chula Vista previously approved up to $4 million for the project through city and Housing Authority housing funds. The commitment was made to Wakeland Housing and Development Corporation or an affiliated entity.

In March 2026, the City Council and Chula Vista Housing Authority extended the deadline to March 17, 2028, for the project to assemble all financing and prepare to begin construction. The extension is a project milestone, not confirmation that construction has started or that the development has been approved for occupancy.

The county’s current action is focused on seeking the state Homekey+ money. If the application succeeds, the award would support the proposed project, but it would not by itself establish a final occupancy date.

Palomar Motel project provides local context

Paseo del Rey would be the county’s second Homekey+ project in Chula Vista, following the January 2026 groundbreaking of the separate 27-unit Palomar Motel project.

The two developments are not interchangeable. The comparison shows that Chula Vista already has one Homekey+-related project moving forward while Paseo del Rey remains a proposal awaiting the outcome of the state funding process.

Next step is the state funding decision

For Chula Vista residents, the immediate consequence is that another supportive-housing proposal has entered a state funding application phase, with a specific site and local public-money commitment already identified.

The next major step is California’s decision on the county’s proposed $20 million Homekey+ application. Until that process and other required project steps are complete, Paseo del Rey should be treated as proposed rather than funded, under construction or ready for occupancy.
