Clarksville shoppers have one day left for Tennessee’s back-to-school tax holiday
Clarksville-area shoppers have until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026, to use Tennessee’s back-to-school sales-tax holiday. The statewide exemption covers qualifying clothing, school and art supplies, and certain personal-use computers and tablets.
The holiday began at 12:01 a.m. Friday, July 31. It is a Tennessee program, not a tax policy created or independently controlled by Clarksville.
What qualifies
General apparel qualifies when each item costs $100 or less. Examples listed by the Tennessee Department of Revenue include shirts, pants, socks, shoes and dresses.
School and art supplies also qualify at $100 or less per item. Examples include backpacks, binders, crayons, paper, pens, pencils, rulers, clay, paints, drawing pads and artist paintbrushes.
Computers purchased for personal use qualify when the purchase price is $1,500 or less. Laptop computers and tablet computers are included within that limit.
Price limits apply per item
Clothing and school or art supplies priced above $100 per item remain taxable. Computers and tablets priced above $1,500 do not qualify for the exemption.
Items normally sold together cannot be split into separate prices to remain below the applicable threshold. The state applies its price-limit rules to the item as sold.
Online orders can qualify
Internet purchases may qualify for the holiday if the transaction and merchandise meet Tennessee’s rules. Before completing an order, shoppers should check the item’s category, price and purchase details.
Business purchases and excluded items
The tax-free treatment is limited to personal-use purchases. Items bought for business or trade purposes do not qualify.
Several categories are also excluded, including jewelry, handbags, sports and recreational equipment, storage media such as flash drives and compact discs, individually purchased software, printer supplies and household appliances.
Clarksville shoppers’ deadline
For residents shopping in Clarksville or online, the final deadline is 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 2, 2026. Before checkout, confirm that the item is eligible, falls within the correct per-item price limit, is for personal use and is not among the excluded categories.
The Tennessee Department of Revenue’s rules control if a retailer guide or product description differs from the state’s eligibility requirements.
