Clarksville voters head into Thursday election with county mayor, sheriff and commission races on the ballot

Clarksville-area voters will go to the polls Thursday, August 6, for a combined Tennessee state primary and Montgomery County general election. The county portion includes races for county mayor, sheriff, County Commission, courts and clerk offices, trustee, register of deeds and four School Board districts.

Election Day polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must use the polling place assigned to their registration; the county’s general location list is not permission to vote at any location.

What is on the ballot

The Montgomery County general-election ballot includes Chancellor Part II, to fill an unexpired term; county mayor; County Commission seats; county trustee; General Sessions and Juvenile Court judge for Division V; sheriff; Circuit Court clerk; county clerk; register of deeds; and School Board seats in Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7. Which county and school-board races appear depends on the voter’s district and precinct.

The Tennessee primary includes governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House seats in the applicable 5th and 7th districts, Tennessee Senate District 23, Tennessee House Districts 67, 68 and 75, and state executive committee positions in the applicable Senate districts. The official voter guide lists the offices and districts for the August 6 election.

Who is running in the major local races

The official qualified-candidate record lists Wes Golden, Isaac Greenwood and Christine Marie McNemar in the county mayor race. The sheriff’s race lists Mike Oliver, Dexter Mines and Johnny R. Ransdell.

County Commission candidates are listed by district. Contested races include Districts 1, 7, 9, 11, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20 and 21, while other districts have one qualified candidate listed in the official record. Voters should use the candidate document and their sample ballot to identify the race that applies to them.

School Board contests are listed for Districts 1, 3, 5 and 7. The qualified-candidate record lists the candidates for each of those districts, including four candidates in District 7.

How the combined primary and general election works

Tennessee is an open-primary state. To vote in the state primary, a registered voter must choose either a Republican or Democratic primary ballot. The Montgomery County general-election races are included on the same election-day ballot.

Not every Clarksville-area voter will see every race. Party selection affects the state-primary contests, while residence, precinct and district assignment determine the applicable county and School Board races.

What to bring and where to vote

All voters must present a Tennessee-issued or federally issued photo ID, even if the ID is expired, whether voting early or on Election Day.

Federal law adds documentation requirements for some first-time voters who registered by mail. The county’s voter guide says those voters may need a current or expired Tennessee or federal photo ID, with an expired ID accompanied by a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck or other government document showing the voter’s name and address.

To confirm your assigned polling place, use the Montgomery County Election Commission‘s district and polling-location tools. The commission warns that voters must be registered in the district served by that polling place. Questions can be directed to the Election Commission at 931-648-5707. Its office is at 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 404, in Clarksville.

Sample ballots and results

The Election Commission’s current-election page provides the official sample-ballot material, qualified-candidate record and access to election results for the August 6 state primary and county general election. Check those materials before leaving for the polls, especially if you have moved or are unsure which districts apply to your address.

Results posted after voting should be treated as unofficial until the election process is completed and the results are certified.
