Cold Watch Ahead, New Housing Approved, and Key City Dates
Housing Development Gets the Green Light
Newark’s Central Planning Board approved a six-story residential project this week, clearing the way for more housing in the city’s downtown area. The building will include more than 200 apartments, ground-floor retail, and on-site parking.
Notably, a portion of the units will be set aside as affordable housing under the city’s inclusionary zoning rules. City officials say the project fits into ongoing efforts to add density near transit and commercial corridors while keeping some units within reach for lower- and middle-income residents.
Extreme Cold Watch in Effect
Residents should brace for dangerously cold conditions heading into the weekend. The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for Newark and much of Essex County, with wind chills potentially dropping well below zero.
City and county agencies are urging people to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and check on elderly neighbors. Pet owners are also reminded to keep animals indoors. Updates are expected as the forecast becomes clearer.
February City Hall Schedule Notes
The city has posted several important dates on its February calendar that may affect services. City Hall will be closed later this month in observance of Lincoln’s Birthday and Washington’s Birthday, which could delay in-person business.
Regular municipal meetings are scheduled to continue on their normal dates, and residents can follow along in person or through the city’s online streaming options. Officials recommend checking agendas ahead of time for items related to zoning, public safety, and neighborhood services.
Looking Ahead
Between new development approvals and a stretch of harsh winter weather, the first week of February is shaping up to be a busy one in Newark. City leaders say more updates on housing, weather response, and upcoming meetings are expected in the days ahead.
