Protest Turns Violent at Federal Building
On Friday afternoon, Eugene police declared a riot after protesters breached the federal building on East 7th Avenue. The situation escalated when windows were smashed, and federal agents and civilian employees inside were threatened. Chief Chris Skinner stated that the intervention was necessary as the protest moved beyond peaceful demonstration. Federal agents from Portland were eventually sent to take over the response.
Bear Sighting Near West Bank Bike Path
Residents in the River Road area were advised to be cautious after a young bear was spotted near the West Bank Bike Path. The bear was first seen around 11:13 a.m. in a backyard near Skip Ct. and Carolyn Dr., and was last observed near the Owosso Bike Bridge. Eugene Police urged residents to keep their distance and keep children and pets close. Oregon State Police have been notified of the sighting.

Residents across the Pacific Northwest, including Eugene, reported seeing a fireball in the night sky on Wednesday at 10:10 p.m. The American Meteor Society logged the event, noting that the object was visible in other cities throughout Oregon and Washington. A local resident shared a video capturing the glittering trail of the fireball as it moved across the sky.
Former Eugene Weekly Manager Arrested for Embezzlement
The former business manager of Eugene Weekly, Elisha Young, was arrested in Ohio following an indictment by a Lane County Grand Jury. She faces charges of first-degree aggravated theft and first-degree theft. Young worked at the publication from 2018 until late 2023 and is accused of stealing money from the paper and failing to pay some of its business partners.
