Fairbanks’ 2026 municipal election process moves past Aug. 5 withdrawal deadline

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — Fairbanks’ 2026 municipal election process moved past its candidate-withdrawal deadline on Aug. 5, setting the stage for the contests that will appear after election officials complete their certification process.

The withdrawal deadline was 5 p.m. Aug. 5. Candidate filing opened at 8 a.m. July 15 and closed at 5 p.m. July 29, according to the City of Fairbanks’ municipal election calendar.

The official search materials reviewed for this article do not include the final certified candidate list. As a result, candidates and winners cannot be identified here, and the field cannot be characterized as uncontested.

Oct. 6 election remains scheduled

The regular Fairbanks municipal election is scheduled for Oct. 6, 2026. Passing the withdrawal deadline does not change that date. Residents should also note a Sept. 6 deadline listed by the city and the Fairbanks North Star Borough for voter registration or updates.

The city’s election information identifies Noel Wien Library as an early-voting location. The borough also provides election timing and early-voting information for Fairbanks-area voters, although the city and borough are separate election jurisdictions.

Ballot question could affect future elections

Fairbanks North Star Borough election materials describe a ballot question on the timing of regular municipal elections. If approved, the change would move future regular municipal elections to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. A no vote would retain the first Tuesday in October.
