Fatal Crash Under Investigation, Rail Upgrades and Traffic Changes Impact Newark Area
Newark, NJ – March 30, 2026 – A fatal crash, major rail upgrades, and new lane closures are shaping transportation and safety across the city.
Transportation and public safety are front and center in Newark as officials respond to a fatal crash, commuters adjust to rail upgrades, and drivers prepare for new lane closures.
Fatal Crash Under Investigation
Authorities are investigating a two-vehicle crash that occurred around 7:30 a.m. Sunday at McCarter Highway and South Street. A 56-year-old Newark resident was transported to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The other driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and Newark Public Safety Department say the investigation remains active. Officials are asking anyone with information to come forward.
Portal North Bridge Now in Service
Meanwhile, regional rail infrastructure saw a major milestone this month with the Portal North Bridge entering service on March 13. The new span replaces the 115-year-old swing bridge over the Hackensack River and is part of the broader Gateway Program.
The upgraded bridge is expected to improve reliability along the busy Northeast Corridor, which serves Newark Penn Station and connects commuters to New York City and beyond. Transit officials say the modern design should reduce delays that have long plagued the aging structure.
Lane Closures to Affect Area Drivers
Drivers traveling near the I-78 Toll Bridge should also expect daytime lane reductions beginning today, March 30, as part of an inspection project. Eastbound lanes heading into New Jersey will be reduced during off-peak hours through midweek.
While the work is outside the city, it could affect regional traffic patterns for Newark residents who commute west or rely on freight corridors tied to the port and airport.
Together, the developments underscore how closely safety, infrastructure investment, and regional mobility are intertwined for New Jersey’s largest city.
