Fresno Daily Brief: Budget Gap, Police Updates, and a Fire Reminder
Fresno, CA – March 1, 2026 – A looming city budget deficit leads the day, as police share shootout video, ramp up DUI patrols, and warn after a candle fire.
City Hall: A tougher budget picture
Fresno officials are projecting a $23.3 million deficit for the city’s fiscal year 2027 budget, setting up another round of difficult tradeoffs as departments are asked to prepare cut plans. City leaders said this would follow multiple years of tightening and warned that the easiest savings have already been used.
The same City Council meeting also touched on several policy moves, including steps toward tighter rules affecting registered sex offenders who seek local office, and a push to lower school-zone speeds to 20 mph ahead of a statewide deadline. Council members also approved another extension for a long-running downtown housing proposal, giving developers more time to secure financing.
Public safety: DUI patrols and a close-call video
Fresno police added extra DUI enforcement Saturday night, with a saturation patrol planned from the evening into the early hours of Sunday. Officials emphasized that impairment isn’t limited to alcohol and can include marijuana as well as prescription or over-the-counter medications.
Separately, police released newly public body-worn camera footage from a December shootout involving officers and a suspect in an alley near West and Clinton avenues. Authorities said a bullet struck an officer’s cap during the exchange, and the suspect later surrendered after additional units arrived. The case has already moved through court with a no-contest plea to two charges, according to the report.
Fire watch: Another warning after a candle blaze
Firefighters also responded to an apartment fire in central Fresno near Fresno Street and Belmont Avenue. Investigators said the fire started when a child was playing with a candle. Two people, including an 8-year-old, got out safely, and neighbors helped knock down flames with extinguishers before crews fully contained the scene.
