Pre-dawn fire destroys vacant home in Fresno County
Fire crews responded after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday to a house fire near Central Avenue and Rio Vista, southeast of Sanger. Crews reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof, shifted to an exterior attack, and brought in engines and a water tender. Officials said the home was believed to be vacant; power lines feeding the property came down at one point and utility crews were called. The cause remains under investigation.
Burglary call ends with suspect falling through a ceiling
Police say a burglary-in-progress report near Calaveras Street and Belmont Avenue Monday evening led to two arrests. One suspect was taken into custody quickly; a second allegedly barricaded inside a garage, fled across rooftops, and entered a nearby home’s attic after removing a swamp cooler. Officers reported the suspect threw debris from above before falling through the ceiling and being detained. He was taken to a hospital for injuries.
San Joaquin River levels expected to run high this spring
Local officials say restoration flows and runoff tied to back-to-back storms and Sierra snowpack could push the San Joaquin River toward some of its highest levels in years as spring progresses. The message for residents: enjoy the water year, but keep an eye on changing river conditions near trails, crossings, and low-lying access points.
Downtown housing project gets a major city-backed boost
City leaders approved an $11.7 million loan and a deadline extension for a long-planned housing development near Chukchansi Park. The proposal calls for 174 units, including a set of affordable apartments, with a timeline that points toward a 2028 opening if financing and final steps stay on track.
Today’s civic note
Caltrans is hosting a free small-business contracting summit Wednesday at the Fresno Convention Center. Separately, a local adult day center serving people with dementia marked an expansion aimed at adding program space and new services.
