Fresno Daily Local Headlines: Arrests, voter ID rally, DUI checkpoint
Fresno, CA – March 5, 2026 – Arrests in a west-central stabbing, a downtown voter-ID rally, and a weekend DUI checkpoint lead today’s brief.
Stabbing and assault: two arrested
Police say a fight at the Westwood Village Apartments near Shields and Valentine on Tuesday afternoon left a 19-year-old man with two stab wounds and a 15-year-old girl with injuries from an assault. Both were taken to a hospital and were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said the suspects drove off but were later located and arrested. One suspect, a teen, was booked into the Juvenile Justice Center; an adult suspect was booked into the Fresno County Jail.
Federal gun cases: sentencing and plea
Federal prosecutors announced one Fresno man was sentenced to a little over three years in prison in a case involving illegal gun possession, including devices described as used to convert firearms to automatic fire. In a separate case, another Fresno man pleaded guilty to being a felon in possession of a firearm after a police pursuit, according to court documents summarized by authorities.
Voting rules debate moves downtown
A group of residents gathered outside the Fresno County Elections Office this week to weigh in on a proposed state measure that would require voters to show identification. Supporters argued the change would strengthen confidence in elections, while opponents pointed to research suggesting voter fraud is rare.
The proposal could appear on the November ballot if it clears the remaining steps in the signature and verification process.
DUI checkpoint planned for Saturday night
Fresno police announced a DUI checkpoint scheduled for Saturday, March 7, running from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. at an undisclosed location selected using crash and impaired-driving data. Officers also reminded drivers that impairment can involve alcohol, marijuana, and some medications.
Officials said a recent enforcement period on Feb. 28 resulted in 19 DUI arrests citywide.
Last call for comments on Fresno’s active transportation plan
Thursday is the deadline for public feedback on the city’s draft 2026 Active Transportation Plan, a blueprint for future sidewalk fixes, bikeway connections, safer crossings, and routes to schools. Advocates praised the broader vision while urging clearer timelines, maintenance planning, and tighter project prioritization.
Comments can be submitted to the city’s Public Works offices at 2600 Fresno Street, Room 4019.
