Fresno’s Former Fresno Bee Building Set for Demolition
Fresno, CA — January 30, 2026 — The city plans to demolish the former Fresno Bee building after costly repairs render it unfit for use.
City Plans Demolition of Former Fresno Bee Building
The city of Fresno has announced plans to demolish the former Fresno Bee building located at 1626 E Street. Purchased in 2020 for $5.75 million, the 220,000-square-foot structure has become uninhabitable due to a catastrophic failure of its air conditioning and boiler systems. Repairing these systems would be prohibitively expensive, leading city officials to opt for demolition, which is estimated to cost between $1 million and $2 million.
Originally constructed in 1975, the building served as the headquarters for The Fresno Bee newspaper, housing its newsrooms and printing facilities. After the newspaper’s operations moved, the city intended to repurpose the space for various departments, including the Public Utilities Department. However, the recent infrastructure failures have made this plan unfeasible.
City officials are now focusing on securing the property to prevent potential hazards, such as fires, and are considering future redevelopment options for the site. An environmental review will be conducted before demolition to address any environmental concerns associated with the building’s industrial past.
