Greensboro residents have one day left to weigh in on regional road and rail priorities

Greensboro-area residents have until Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2026, to comment on a draft plan that would assign local input points to regional roadway and rail projects competing for a place in North Carolina’s transportation funding process.

The Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking feedback on its Draft P8 Regional Impact Local Input Point Assignment for projects in the fiscal year 2028-2037 Transportation Improvement Program. The assignments remain proposed; they are not funding awards, construction approvals or guarantees that any project will be built.

What is open for comment

The draft concerns how the Greensboro MPO would distribute local input points among eligible Regional Impact projects under NCDOT‘s Prioritization 8.0 process.

Those points are one part of a longer evaluation used to determine which eligible transportation projects advance toward state funding consideration. NCDOT says local input points account for 30% of a Regional Impact project’s score. They do not, by themselves, determine whether a project will receive funding or reach construction.

The public notice specifically discusses regional roadway and rail projects. The MPO’s broader federally required planning responsibilities also cover highway, transit, bicycle, rail and pedestrian facilities.

The Greensboro MPO planning area includes the city of Greensboro, most of unincorporated Guilford County and the towns of Oak Ridge, Pleasant Garden, Sedalia, Stokesdale and Summerfield.

What happens next

The MPO’s Transportation Advisory Committee is scheduled to consider the draft assignment for adoption on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, at 2 p.m. The meeting is scheduled to be held online. The TAC is the MPO’s policy-making body and makes decisions involving transportation planning, infrastructure, services and public investment within the region.

Any action on Aug. 12 would still be part of the broader NCDOT prioritization and State Transportation Improvement Program process. NCDOT says the 2028-2037 STIP is developed through multiple funding categories and that a later comment period is expected when the draft STIP is released in early 2027.

The local assignments could influence how eligible projects perform in the Regional Impact competition, but they do not guarantee that a road or rail project will advance, receive money or reach construction.
