Henderson County Eligible for Renew NC Infrastructure Grants as Applications Open

Henderson County is eligible to compete for federal disaster-recovery infrastructure grants through North Carolina’s Renew NC Community Infrastructure Program, but no Henderson County or Hendersonville application or award was located in the local records reviewed.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce opened the first application round July 6, 2026, at noon. It offers $55 million from an overall allocation of approximately $193.5 million for infrastructure projects connected to Hurricane Helene impacts and recovery requirements. Applications are due by 5 p.m. September 8, 2026.

Henderson County is an eligible recovery area

The state program lists Henderson County among the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s “Most Impacted and Distressed,” or MID, counties. Local governments located in HUD- or state-identified MID areas are eligible applicants.

Eligibility does not guarantee a grant, and it does not mean a specific Henderson County project has been selected. This article concerns Henderson County, North Carolina—not the separate City of Henderson in Vance County.

What the grants could fund

Eligible activities may include restoration of critical services and infrastructure, public utilities, water and sewer systems, flood-control and drainage repairs, stormwater management, public facilities, public spaces, parks, recreation facilities, property acquisition, demolition, site preparation and related construction or rehabilitation work.

Broadband or Wi-Fi infrastructure may qualify when it meets the program’s regulatory standards and national objectives, although the state says it may not receive priority in a particular funding round.

Projects must be tied to Hurricane Helene impacts or recovery and must meet HUD and other federal requirements, including applicable environmental, accessibility and national-objective rules. Grants generally range from $500,000 to $15 million per project, depending on scope and need.

For this first round, the state will award priority points to water and sewer projects, parks and recreation facilities, and roads and bridges. The July 6 announcement also says mitigation-only projects will not be awarded during this round.

Applications will be scored competitively

The Division of Community Revitalization will score proposals based on factors including applicant capacity, community need, the soundness of the development approach, leveraged resources and projected long-term outcomes. Projects will be ranked by total score, subject to threshold compliance, readiness and available funds.

Local governments are strongly encouraged, but not required, to use the state’s prescreening process before applying. Applicants must hold at least one public hearing before submitting an application and a second hearing by the time an award contract is signed.

What Henderson residents should watch for

Henderson County’s official news and meeting records were reviewed for a related application, public hearing, authorization or award. No such local filing was located in the records reviewed. That is not proof that no application exists; it means no application or award was established through the sources checked.

Residents and local businesses can watch county and municipal public-hearing notices, governing-board agendas, application announcements and later state award postings before the September 8 deadline. Until a local government announces an application or the state announces selections, the local consequence is an open funding opportunity—not a confirmed project, construction schedule, award or change in taxes or services.
