Holmes Avenue makeover moves ahead

Huntsville is pushing forward a major multimodal overhaul of Holmes Avenue, a key east-west corridor linking downtown, UAH, and the edge of Cummings Research Park.

The plan totals more than $30 million and includes a large federal grant component. Proposed upgrades include bike lanes, improved sidewalks, lighting, benches, trees, and landscaped medians aimed at making the corridor safer and more comfortable for people walking and biking, not just drivers.

City leaders have approved an engineering design and construction administration contract, with construction timing still measured in years: work is not expected to start until 2027, with a projected finish around 2030.

Utilities governance: consolidation on the table

At City Hall, a separate debate is brewing over how Huntsville Utilities is governed. The City Council is weighing whether to combine the electric, natural gas, and water boards into a single governing entity.

The discussion is tied to long-range planning for grid modernization and regional energy needs, including a proposed natural gas pipeline effort in North Alabama. Supporters argue consolidation could simplify contracting and administration, while skeptics warn it could reduce transparency and dilute subject-matter oversight.

Campaign season starts early for City Council

Even with the municipal election months away, the field is already getting busier. Recent candidate announcements mean the council districts on the ballot this year now have declared challengers.

Qualifying is expected later this spring, but the early starts signal that pocketbook issues like housing costs, utility bills, and traffic will be front-and-center in 2026 city politics.
