I-44 reopens in downtown St. Louis, but some closures remain
I-44 reopened June 26 after sinkhole repairs near North Broadway, but Broadway and eastbound I-70 express lanes were still closed nearby.
I-44 reopened in downtown St. Louis on June 26 after sinkhole repairs near North Broadway, but the traffic disruption was not fully over.
MoDOT said the sinkhole exposed one of the bridge footings on the I-44 bridge over Biddle and North Broadway, which is why the closure stretched for nearly two weeks. The state agency had shut down westbound I-44/I-70 eastbound at Tucker, eastbound I-44/I-55 northbound at the Poplar Street Bridge, eastbound I-70 express lanes at Union Boulevard, and the North Broadway ramp to eastbound I-44/westbound I-70.
As of the city’s June 26 update, the interstate was back open, but eastbound I-70 express lanes at Union Boulevard, the Broadway exit from westbound I-44, and Broadway north of Biddle were still closed while utility work continued. Drivers heading downtown or through the riverfront corridor should check MoDOT’s traveler map before leaving.
