Statewide tornado drill tests sirens and alerts
Lexington joined Kentucky’s Severe Weather Awareness Week with a statewide tornado drill at 10:07 a.m. Wednesday. Emergency officials said outdoor warning sirens were expected to sound for about two minutes, and residents were asked not to call 911 during the test.
Those enrolled in LexAlerts were also set to receive a test message clearly labeled as a test. The drill was designed to practice the full warning chain, including broadcast alerts and NOAA weather radio, while reminding households to review shelter plans and where to get trusted weather updates.
Fayette-area senators file dozens of bills as deadline hits
State lawmakers representing parts of Fayette County have filed more than 60 bills this session, according to a roundup released Monday as the Senate’s bill-filing window closed. One senator was reported to have filed 17 bills, with many focused on education.
The update also noted the session calendar could still be adjusted after a winter-weather cancellation earlier in the session, and that the House deadline to file new bills falls on Wednesday, March 4.
Lexington Fire Department recognizes promotions, retirements, and standout service
The Lexington Fire Department held its annual awards banquet over the weekend, marking the event’s 19th year. The ceremony highlighted promotions and retirements and recognized individual achievements across the department.
Organizers said the banquet was sold out and drew about 400 attendees, a reminder of how much community pride still centers on public safety work that happens quietly every day.
New ballet announced for the Lexington Opera House
Bluegrass Youth Ballet announced a spring production, ‘Mira and The Thieves,’ scheduled for April 3 and 4 at the Lexington Opera House. The organization described the show as a contemporary, story-driven ballet with themes tied to attention, creativity, and mental health.
