Lunar New Year Crowds, Transit Alerts and Sunny Skies Mark Busy SF Weekend
San Francisco, CA – March 8, 2026 – After a packed Lunar New Year weekend, city officials flagged transit impacts, sunny weather and a Civic Center rally.
San Francisco is wrapping up a lively weekend filled with celebrations, rallies and plenty of visitors across downtown.
Lunar New Year Draws Big Crowds
The annual Chinese New Year Parade stepped off Saturday evening, drawing large crowds to Chinatown and surrounding neighborhoods. City officials said public safety staffing was elevated following last month’s Super Bowl events, with police and emergency teams deployed along the parade route.
Weekend festivities also included the Chinatown Community Street Fair, continuing through Sunday. Organizers once again billed the celebration as one of the largest Lunar New Year events outside Asia.
Transit and Traffic Impacts Continue
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency issued a weekly advisory noting street closures, Muni reroutes and heavier traffic from March 5 through March 11. Areas around Chinatown, Union Square and Civic Center have seen the biggest impacts.
Drivers were urged to expect delays, and transit riders were encouraged to check for real-time service updates as event-related reroutes remain in effect through the weekend.
Civic Center Rally and Clear Skies
On Saturday afternoon, demonstrators gathered at Civic Center Plaza for a Stand Up for Science rally, part of a coordinated day of action focused on federal research funding and public health policy.
Adding to the upbeat atmosphere, forecasters say a warm and sunny pattern has settled over the Bay Area after a stretch of windy weather. Gusty conditions eased Friday, making for a clear and comfortable weekend across San Francisco.
With major events winding down, city leaders are expected to assess crowd management and transit performance before the next wave of spring gatherings.
