MassDOT advances $9.7 million I-195 bridge-deck replacement in Rehoboth for autumn construction

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has advanced a planned replacement of the eastbound and westbound I-195 bridge decks over the Palmer River in Rehoboth, with construction scheduled to begin in autumn 2026.

The project calls for new 8-inch reinforced-concrete composite decks, along with repairs to the bridge abutments, backwalls and piers. It also includes reconstruction of the approach roadways and work on guardrail transitions. MassDOT estimates the total contract cost at $9,659,722.31 and the federal participating construction cost at $10,497,706.67.

Construction is planned in stages intended to keep two traffic lanes open at all times. Travelers using I-195 through Rehoboth should expect work-zone activity as the bridge deck and related components are replaced. MassDOT has not provided a specific start date beyond autumn 2026, and the project page does not list a completion date or lane-closure schedule.

As of July 24, 2026, the project status was “PS&E Received – Resub 1.” The project is planned for funding through the 2026 Southeastern Massachusetts Metropolitan Planning Organization Transportation Improvement Program. The next known step is the planned start of construction this autumn.
