Millis voters approve middle-high school project as planning moves toward 2027 construction

Millis voters approved the Middle-High School Building Project by a vote of 1,599 to 547 in a special election Dec. 8, 2025, moving the project into its next phase of planning before the planned start of construction in spring 2027.

The result represented 74.5% support and 25.5% opposition. The project is being developed for Millis students and residents through the Massachusetts School Building Authority process, with Millis Public Schools and the Millis School Building Committee involved in the planning effort.

Construction is planned for spring 2027

The project schedule calls for construction to begin in spring 2027 with a new middle-school addition. The addition is expected to be completed in August 2028.

Those dates describe planned and expected milestones, not completed work. The voter approval advances the project, but construction has not begun. Pre-construction work and permitting are expected to continue before building starts.

Millis Public Schools said construction-manager selection was expected in early March 2026. After that selection, pre-construction tasks and permitting were expected to take approximately one year. That work is intended to prepare the project for the planned spring 2027 construction start.

Feasibility study preceded the project’s next steps

The town’s capital-planning materials identify a $1.3 million school feasibility study that was previously approved at Town Meeting. The study is part of the school-building planning process and is separate from the construction phase.

The $1.3 million figure should not be read as the project’s total construction cost. It refers to the feasibility study approved by the town. As planning proceeds, the project will affect school facilities, construction activity, municipal borrowing and future student operations in Millis.

The next identified milestone is the expected selection of a construction manager in early March 2026. Pre-construction tasks and permitting would then continue for about a year, followed by the planned spring 2027 start of the middle-school addition. If the current schedule holds, the addition is expected to be completed in August 2028.
