Moreno Valley Daily Local Headlines: Mall Closure Update, Truck Routes Workshop, Gunfire Arrest
Moreno Valley, CA – February 28, 2026 – Mall fire-safety closure continues; truck-route workshop set; deputies report arrest after shots fired.
Moreno Valley’s biggest story heading into the weekend remains the partial shutdown of Moreno Valley Mall, while City Hall also teed up a public workshop on proposed truck-route changes. Here are the key local headlines from the last few days.
Moreno Valley Mall closure: what’s been fixed so far
City officials say most interior portions of Moreno Valley Mall must remain closed until remaining life-safety and fire-protection issues are corrected and verified. A city update this week said three of nine critical items had been corrected or abated, including work tied to the sprinkler and standpipe systems and an emergency generator. The remaining items listed include portions of the fire alarm and smoke-control systems, plus fire doors and emergency lighting related to exits.
At a special public meeting, tenants and workers described immediate financial strain and urged faster pathways for compliant businesses to reopen, but city leaders said reopening is tied to required fire-safety standards and inspections.
Truck-route updates: public workshop set for March 4
The City will host a workshop Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall to review proposed truck-route updates and gather community input. The city says the review is part of complying with recent state requirements aimed at reducing air pollution and protecting sensitive land uses such as homes, schools, parks, and hospitals, including separation standards where applicable.
Deputies arrest Moreno Valley man after reported gunfire
In a separate public-safety update, sheriff’s officials reported the arrest of a Moreno Valley man accused of firing shots into the air in the Heacock Street area. Authorities said the suspect ran from deputies but was detained after a short foot chase, and no injuries were reported.
School district appoints new board member
