Omaha Daily Brief: Sinkhole closure, streetcar relief push, and election updates
Omaha, NE – February 26, 2026 – Aksarben sinkhole repairs snarl Pacific St., a fatal-crash case advances, and streetcar relief demands grow.
1) Aksarben sinkhole: Pacific Street closure and a long fix
A sudden sinkhole at 67th and Pacific swallowed two vehicles this week and has kept a key Aksarben corridor partially shut down. Crews have been working around the clock area, and drivers should expect detours and slower commutes near the intersection.
City officials say the repair is not just a quick patch: utility work has to come first, and the road rebuild is expected to take weeks once the underground issues are addressed. In the meantime, plan extra time if you normally cut through Pacific to reach Midtown, the Blackstone area, or I-80 ramps.
2) North Omaha fatal crash: case moves to district court
A North Omaha pedestrian death investigation is moving forward after a court hearing this week. Prosecutors allege a vehicle struck and killed 19-year-old Ramarionna Devers near 65th and Ames in January after a domestic confrontation.
The suspect, 21-year-old Nikia Evans, faces felony charges including second-degree murder and leaving the scene. A judge set bond at $750,000, and the case has been sent to district court.
3) Streetcar construction: new alliance presses for relief
Downtown and Midtown business owners impacted by streetcar construction have formed the Streetcar Impact Alliance, saying blocked access and parking challenges are driving customers elsewhere. The group delivered a list of requests to the mayor, including more consistent communication, direct grants for proven losses, temporary tax relief, and a validated parking program for workers and neighbors.
The alliance has also set a response deadline of March 6 and says it is prepared to take its case to the City Council and broaden public outreach if changes do not follow.
4) Voting logistics: Douglas County polling places shifting
Douglas County election officials say some polling locations will change for the upcoming statewide primary election. The election commission expects about 7% of polling places could be affected, with impacted voters notified by postcard in April. Officials also remind voters that mail ballots are available by request.
