OPS budget gap, Capitol security debate, and a West Maple closure
Omaha, NE – February 24, 2026 – OPS flags a $50.6M budget gap, Capitol weapons rules debated, and crews probe a house fire near 31st and Grebe.
1) OPS budget outlook: a $50.6M gap and possible levy increase
Omaha Public Schools leaders briefed the Board of Education on a long-range financial forecast that projects a $50.6 million shortfall tied to a state-aid formula issue. District administrators said the gap would hit the 2026–27 school year and could require the levy to rise to about $1.05.
District officials described the coming year as a tight one, with a flat budget approach and the possibility that staff pay increases pause temporarily. The district also noted that property valuations will play a big role in how the tax request is ultimately shaped, with early numbers expected later this spring.
2) Capitol security debate: what changes could mean for visitors
State lawmakers continued debating a proposal that would change how weapons are handled inside the Nebraska State Capitol. The conversation has centered on balancing public access with safety, especially during heated committee hearings.
As discussed on the floor, one version would allow licensed concealed carry while also setting the stage for new screening and enforcement procedures handled by the Nebraska State Patrol, if the bill advances.
3) Roadwork heads-up: West Maple Road closure begins
Drivers on the far west side got a big new detour to plan around: West Maple Road is closing from 252nd to 264th for road construction. The closure is expected to last about four weeks, so commuters may want to build in extra time and watch for shifting traffic patterns nearby.
- Where: West Maple Road (252nd–264th)
- When: starting Tuesday, Feb. 24
- How long: about four weeks
4) Weekend fire: one displaced after an accidental blaze
Fire crews responded Sunday evening to a single-story home near 31st and Grebe Streets. Investigators later ruled the fire accidental, and officials said it appeared to start near the fireplace chimney.
No injuries were reported. One person was displaced, and damage was estimated at about $55,000.
