Peoria Sees Significant Drop in Shootings and Homicides in 2025
Peoria experienced a notable decrease in violent incidents in 2025. Shooting incidents dropped by 18%, from 78 in 2024 to 64 in 2025. The number of gunshot victims also declined, with 75 reported in 2025 compared to 90 the previous year. Homicides decreased by 45%, from 22 in 2024 to 12 in 2025. Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria attributed this progress to consistent strategies and community collaboration, emphasizing the importance of maintaining and building on this momentum.
Peoria Public Library Partners with Scripps National Spelling Bee
The Peoria Public Library has become an official regional sponsor for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Central Illinois. This partnership covers eight counties and 300 eligible schools, with the City of Peoria, Peoria County, and Peoria Public Schools District 150 serving as key partners. The library will host a Regional Spelling Bee in March, with the winner advancing to the national competition in Washington, D.C., in May. This initiative aims to ignite a love for learning and foster an inclusive community.
Recent Traffic Incidents in Peoria
Peoria has witnessed several traffic incidents recently. On January 25, a 16-year-old male was arrested for motor vehicle theft and resisting a peace officer after fleeing from a stolen vehicle that crashed at Nebraska Avenue and Hampton Street. On January 28, a multi-vehicle accident occurred at East War Memorial Drive and East Harvard Avenue, involving three vehicles and resulting in at least one injury. Additionally, on January 25, a two-vehicle accident with injuries was reported at Northeast Adams Street and Hancock Street, involving a blue Buick and a red sedan.
