Race Weekend, Youth Hoops and New Art Exhibits Energize Huntsville

It’s been a full and lively weekend across the Rocket City, with major events drawing visitors, families and athletes into Huntsville’s parks, arenas and cultural spaces.

Race to Space Returns

The annual Race to Space Marathon and Half Marathon took over the city Saturday and Sunday, with runners navigating courses that highlight Huntsville’s ties to space exploration. The two-day event brought road closures near key corridors and a noticeable uptick in downtown foot traffic as spectators cheered on participants.

Local officials have long pointed to the race as both a fitness celebration and an economic boost, filling hotel rooms and restaurants during the early spring season.

Youth Basketball Tournament Draws Crowds

Meanwhile, the North Alabama Challenge basketball tournament ran March 20–22, welcoming youth teams and their families from across the region. Games were held at multiple venues, keeping gyms busy throughout the weekend.

For many local businesses, the steady stream of visiting teams provided another strong sports tourism weekend — a trend city leaders continue to cultivate through expanded event recruitment.

New Exhibit Opens at Huntsville Museum of Art

On the cultural side, the Huntsville Museum of Art opened its newest exhibition, A Beautiful Despair, on March 21. The show joins ongoing displays such as Youth Art Month and New Realism, giving residents fresh reasons to spend time downtown.

Museum leaders say spring openings are designed to coincide with increased seasonal foot traffic and community events.

Looking Ahead: Global Force Symposium

City officials are also preparing for the AUSA Global Force Symposium, set for March 24–26 at the Von Braun Center. The annual defense and aerospace gathering is expected to bring national attention — and another surge of visitors — to Huntsville later this week.

All told, Huntsville is closing out the weekend with momentum, blending athletics, arts and aerospace into another characteristically busy March in the Rocket City.
