SEC Championship, TU Leadership Change and Senate Race Lead Tulsa Headlines
Tulsa, OK – March 22, 2026 – SEC gymnastics fills BOK Center, TU names a new president, and a Senate run reshapes the 1st District race.
SEC Gymnastics Championship Draws Crowds Downtown
The BOK Center was in the national spotlight Saturday as the 2026 SEC Gymnastics Championship took over downtown Tulsa. For the first time, all nine SEC programs competed in the conference championship, bringing elite athletes and a surge of visitors to the city.
Top-seeded Oklahoma entered the meet as a favorite, with LSU and Florida close behind in national qualifying scores. Hotels, restaurants and nearby businesses saw increased traffic as fans packed the arena and surrounding entertainment districts.
University of Tulsa Names New President
The University of Tulsa announced this month that Stacy Leeds will serve as its 22nd president, beginning July 1, 2026. Leeds, a Cherokee Nation citizen and TU law graduate, previously served in academic leadership roles and as a tribal court judge.
Her appointment marks a historic moment for the university and comes at a time when TU is focused on enrollment growth, research expansion and community partnerships. University leaders say her legal background and experience in higher education administration position her to guide TU into its next chapter.
Senate Bid Opens Up Tulsa-Based House Seat
Political attention is also turning to Oklahoma’s 1st Congressional District, which is centered in the Tulsa metro area. Congressman Kevin Hern announced on March 11 that he will run for the U.S. Senate, setting off what is expected to be a competitive race to replace him in the House.
Several Republican and Democratic candidates have already declared campaigns for the open seat, including current state and local officials. With filing season ahead, Tulsa is poised to become a key battleground in both the congressional and Senate contests.
From packed arenas to campus leadership shifts and early campaign moves, it has been a busy stretch for Tulsa as March comes to a close.
