Stockton Daily Local Headlines: Arrest in December homicide, Valley Oak gunfire, and a busy weekend downtown
Stockton, CA – February 27, 2026 – Police arrested a suspect in a December killing; shots hit a Valley Oak home; StocktonCon arrives this weekend.
Public safety
Detectives say a man has been arrested in connection with a woman’s killing in Stockton’s Civic District in December. The victim was found unresponsive in the 400 block of East Lindsay Street on Dec. 12, and police later identified 47-year-old Luis Zavalza as the primary suspect. Investigators said he was already being held on another alleged offense when he was tied to the homicide.
In another incident, police said gunfire struck a home in the Valley Oak District on Tuesday evening in the 600 block of Cabana Way. A woman was inside at the time and no injuries were reported. Officers described the suspects as three to four males who left the area in two vehicles, and the case remains under investigation.
Courts
A Stockton arson-murder case from June 2024 moved toward closure this week after a man who admitted setting a fatal house fire that killed a mother and two young boys was sentenced to life in prison without parole, according to a statement from prosecutors. Authorities framed the case as a reminder to take domestic-violence threats seriously and to seek help early when situations escalate.
Weekend watch
Looking for something lighter: StocktonCon Winter is set for Feb. 28–Mar. 1 at Adventist Health Arena, bringing a packed weekend of pop-culture vendors, costumes and panels. The city’s event calendar also lists a comedy night at the Bob Hope Theatre on Feb. 27, giving downtown a one-two punch of late-night entertainment and family-friendly daytime crowds.
Sports-wise, college softball is in town for the Libby Matson Tournament at Pacific, with games scheduled Feb. 27–28 at Bill Simoni Field. If you’re heading out, expect limited parking around campus during game windows and keep an eye on traffic conditions if you’re using I-5 to get across town.
