SWAT Standoff, Highway Crashes and Major Development Plans Lead Fort Wayne Headlines
Fort Wayne, IN – March 7, 2026 – A SWAT standoff, I-69 crashes, and major development proposals made for a busy week across the city.
It’s been a packed few days across Fort Wayne, with public safety incidents, traffic disruptions and future development plans all drawing attention.
SWAT Standoff Follows Mental Health Crisis
Police responded to a tense situation at a home off Lower Huntington Road earlier this week after reports of a person in crisis. Officers initially attempted to make contact, but when the individual did not come outside, the department’s SWAT team was called in.
Authorities say the situation stemmed from a mental health crisis. After several hours, the scene was brought under control. No major injuries were reported. The incident prompted a significant police presence in the area and temporary disruptions for nearby residents.
Multiple Crashes Snarl I-69 Traffic
Drivers on the city’s northwest side faced major delays after a series of crashes along Interstate 69 near the Goshen Road exit. At least two lanes were shut down at different points Monday afternoon as crews cleared vehicles and assessed damage.
The crashes created a lengthy backup during peak travel hours. Motorists were urged to use alternate routes while first responders worked the scene. Conditions have since returned to normal, but the incidents served as another reminder to use caution during busy travel periods.
QuikTrip Proposal Advances
In development news, the Fort Wayne Plan Commission voted to recommend City Council approval of plans for a new QuikTrip near Coldwater Road. The proposal includes a convenience store and fueling station in a growing commercial corridor.
The project now heads to City Council for further consideration. Supporters say it would bring additional services and investment to the area, while some neighbors have raised questions about traffic and nearby impacts.
City Seeks Input on Housing Plan
City leaders are also asking residents to weigh in on Fort Wayne’s 2026–2030 consolidated housing plan. The federally required plan helps guide how certain housing and community development funds are spent over the next several years.
Officials say community feedback will help shape priorities, including affordable housing and neighborhood improvements.
