Two overnight I-65 South closures at the Kennedy Bridge will squeeze Louisville commutes this week
Louisville KY – Two overnight I-65 South closures at the Kennedy Bridge will reroute drivers this week as repair work continues and bigger summer disruptions loom.
Drivers heading into Louisville from Southern Indiana will face two full overnight closures of I-65 South at the Kennedy Bridge this week, with traffic routed off the interstate while crews perform repair work under the bridge.
According to WAVE and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the closure windows are 10 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, to 4 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, and 8 p.m. Friday, April 10, to 8 a.m. Saturday, April 11. All lanes of I-65 South will close just past Exit 1 to U.S. 31 South, Stansifer Avenue and 10th Street in Jeffersonville.
The official detour sends drivers to I-265 West, then I-64 East, to reconnect with I-65 South. For anyone crossing into Louisville overnight, that means extra planning this week, especially for shift workers, freight traffic, late-night deliveries and weekend travelers.
Why the bridge has to be fully closed
This is not a routine lane restriction. KYTC said crews need the bridge free of traffic so it does not move while they perform steel repairs underneath the roadway, including precision machining known as line boring. In plain terms, the work requires a stable bridge so crews can keep the repairs properly aligned.
That matters because the Kennedy Bridge is in the second and final phase of an expansion-joint replacement project. The right-side joint replacement is already finished. Traffic is now shifted into the right three lanes while crews work on the left three lanes.
What Louisville drivers should expect beyond this week
The current traffic setup on the Kennedy Bridge is not expected to disappear after these two overnight shutdowns. KYTC says the lane shift will remain in place through project completion, which is anticipated in fall 2026.
So while this week brings the most visible disruption, the broader story for Louisville commuters is that this bridge remains an active work zone for months. Anyone who regularly uses I-65 between Southern Indiana and downtown Louisville should expect the narrowed traffic pattern to continue, not reset in a few days.
It is also important to separate this week’s bridge closures from the larger I-65 construction still ahead. The immediate action is only southbound I-65 at the Kennedy Bridge during the posted overnight windows. It is not a full shutdown of the entire Louisville corridor this week.
The next major I-65 disruption is coming soon
Still, drivers should keep an eye on the next phase of summer construction. A separate I-65 Central Corridor project is scheduled to close a five-mile stretch of I-65 through Louisville from June 1 through Aug. 1 while three bridges are replaced. Project officials say that temporary shutdown will speed the work and cut down on what would otherwise be a much longer period of lane restrictions.
For Louisville residents, the takeaway is straightforward: avoid I-65 South at the Kennedy Bridge during the two overnight closure windows this week, follow the signed I-265 and I-64 detour, and expect I-65 to stay a transportation pressure point well into the summer.
