Wichita daily local headlines: sales tax vote, free rides, and fog-to-storm swings
Wichita, KS – March 3, 2026 – Voters decide on a 1% sales tax today; free transit rides offered; fog fades, storms and siren drills hit this week.
Sales tax decision day
Wichita voters are heading to the polls today to decide whether to add a 1% city-wide sales tax. Election Day voting runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at assigned polling sites, and many voters have a different location than they are used to.
The proposal outlines funding for several big-ticket priorities, including public safety facilities and equipment, homeless services, and other city projects discussed in recent months. If approved, the tax would take effect later this summer and run for multiple years.
- Double-check your polling place before you go.
- If you still have a mail ballot, follow county guidance on drop-off options instead of mailing it late.
Free bus and paratransit rides for voters
To help people get to the polls, Wichita Transit says fixed-route buses and paratransit rides are free today. Riders do not need to show proof of voting, and service is expected to follow a regular weekday schedule.
Travel caution: fog, then storms
Dense fog was forecast to impact visibility around the metro, including major corridors, with drizzle possible. Forecasters also flagged a return of thunderstorms, with additional rounds later this week that could bring stronger storms and heavier rain.
If you commute early or drive after dark, give yourself extra time and keep an eye on changing conditions.
Severe weather preparedness week
This week is set aside statewide for severe weather readiness, including a tornado drill planned for Wednesday morning. It is a good time to review where you would shelter at home or work and how you will get warnings if storms move in.
Campus note
Wichita State is promoting a community-wide tailgate ahead of Saturday’s men’s basketball game, with free activities planned outside Koch Arena.
