Winter Storm Shuts Schools, Closes Roads and Disrupts Travel Across Reno
Reno, NV – March 30, 2026 – A powerful winter storm closed schools, state offices and highways, snarling travel and straining services across the region.
A powerful winter storm sweeping through northern Nevada has triggered widespread closures and travel disruptions across Reno and surrounding communities.
Schools and State Offices Closed
Washoe County School District schools were closed Tuesday as heavy snow and hazardous road conditions made travel unsafe for students and staff. Storey County and Carson City schools also shut down.
State government offices and the University of Nevada, Reno suspended in-person operations as the storm intensified. Officials urged residents to limit travel and monitor local alerts.
Highways and Airport Impacted
Interstate 80 was closed near the California state line, with chain controls and traffic holds reported throughout the Sierra corridor. Northbound U.S. 395 lanes near Village Parkway were also shut down following a deadly crash during slick conditions.
At Reno-Tahoe International Airport, multiple flights were delayed or canceled as snow and low visibility complicated operations. Travelers were advised to check directly with airlines before heading to the airport.
Emergency Response and Public Services
Reno fire crews responded to a blaze at a vacant apartment complex during the storm, successfully containing the fire without reported injuries. Meanwhile, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada canceled Mobile Harvest distributions due to weather concerns, citing safety for volunteers and families.
Local officials emphasized preparedness as additional snowfall was forecast through midweek. Road crews continued plowing operations, but warned that icy conditions could persist even after snowfall tapers off.
What Residents Should Know
Residents are encouraged to avoid nonessential travel, allow extra time for commutes and check on vulnerable neighbors. Updates on school reopenings, government services and road conditions are expected as the storm system moves out of the region.
