Worcester Daily Local Headlines: Ice Alert, Closures, and Community Updates

Worcester, MA – March 5, 2026 – Icy conditions prompt city warnings and Friday closures; plus a restaurant reopening date and big lottery wins.

Roads and sidewalks: ice expected overnight

City officials warned Worcester residents to limit non-essential travel Thursday night into Friday morning as rain is expected to flip to freezing rain and ice, with some snow possible. Public works crews said they will begin treating roads as soon as temperatures drop, but pre-treating is not expected to be effective with rain washing salt and brine away. Non-emergency issues can be routed through 311.

Friday closures tied to the weather

The city said Worcester Public Schools will be closed Friday, March 6. The Worcester Senior Center will also be closed, along with three public library branches: Goddard, Roosevelt, and Tatnuck Magnet.

Earlier this week: a 2-hour school delay

Just a day earlier, Worcester’s school district had already shifted to a 2-hour delay on Wednesday, March 4 because of an expected wintry mix. Officials also canceled part-day preschool that day while administrative offices were expected to operate on a normal schedule.

Help with energy bills: assistance events coming to Worcester

A regional push to connect customers with bill help is bringing several in-person assistance stops to Worcester later this month. The utility says staff can help residents explore options like budget billing, discount rates for qualifying customers, and a newer payment-assistance bundle that combines a deferred payment agreement, automatic monthly payments, and a budget plan.

On the local calendar: events are listed for March 18 and March 19 at 714 Main St., March 20 at 18 Chestnut St., and March 25 at 50 Canton St.

Business & community

A downtown restaurant that closed after an electrical fire last September has announced a grand reopening date. The Mediterranean-focused spot in the Glass Tower at 446 Main St. is planning to reopen March 26, with hiring and reservations expected to ramp up ahead of the return.

And for the ‘check your tickets’ file: two $100,000 lottery prizes were sold at the same supermarket on West Boylston Street, according to state lottery information shared this week.
