Worcester Schools Delay Boundary Scenarios Until August 2026

Worcester Public Schools has moved the first public presentation of proposed school boundary and quadrant scenarios from June to August 2026 after community feedback, starting a process that could change school assignments, feeder pathways and transportation planning across the district.

The initial scenarios will be presented to the School Committee’s Standing Committee on Operations and Governance. The district has not said which neighborhoods, schools or students would be reassigned under those scenarios.

Public forums scheduled for the fall

Worcester Public Schools has scheduled seven facilitated public forums for Sept. 2, Sept. 16, Sept. 29, Oct. 13, Oct. 19, Oct. 26 and Nov. 7, 2026. The district’s timeline calls for final scenarios to be presented to the full School Committee in November.

The project is intended to address overcrowding, under-enrollment, building capacity and unclear pathways from preschool through graduation. The district cites Rice Square and Chandler elementary schools as overcrowding examples and Sullivan and Forest Grove middle schools as schools at or exceeding physical capacity. Its stated goal is to reduce overcrowding in at least 90% of schools currently over capacity and increase use of under-enrolled schools to at least 90% of building capacity. Those figures are goals, not reported results. Implementation planning is scheduled for December 2026 through June 2027, with newly zoned schools anticipated to take effect in the 2027-28 school year.
