Worcester Faces Winter Challenges Amid School Closures and Parking Bans
Worcester, MA — January 31, 2026 — The city confronts severe winter conditions, leading to school closures, parking bans, and community events.
Severe Cold Leads to School Closures and Parking Bans
Worcester, MA — January 31, 2026 — The city is grappling with extreme winter conditions, resulting in significant disruptions. On January 29, Worcester Public Schools announced the closure of all schools due to hazardous wind chills, with all administrative offices remaining open. Head Start and after-school activities were also canceled, though athletic events scheduled for later that day and the following Saturday proceeded as planned. A cold weather advisory was in effect until late that morning, with wind chills dropping as low as 20 degrees below zero.
In response to the severe cold, the City of Worcester activated a warming center on January 30 at the Worcester Senior Center, operating from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Residents were urged to take precautions, including avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure, dressing in layers, and heating homes safely. The warming center provided a refuge for those in need during the extreme temperatures.
Additionally, a Declared Winter Parking Ban was implemented on January 6, 2026, due to expected ice accumulation. The ban was lifted on January 30 at 10 a.m., allowing residents to retrieve vehicles from municipal garages without charge until 8 p.m. that day. Regular parking rates resumed for vehicles entering municipal garages after 10 a.m. on January 30.
Community Events Amidst Winter Weather
Despite the challenging weather, Worcester residents have opportunities to engage in community events. On January 31, the “Pull the Covers Off: 90’s Fest” took place at the Off The Rails Music Venue, offering a nostalgic experience for attendees.
Additionally, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year (TET 2026) celebration was held on January 31 at 30 Anna St, providing cultural festivities for the community. (allevents.in)
Traffic Incident on Route 190
On January 28, a crash with injuries was reported on Route 190 northbound near West Mountain Street in Worcester. Emergency crews responded to the scene, and the incident prompted an investigation into the cause and the condition of those involved.
Upcoming Public Meetings
Residents are encouraged to participate in upcoming public agency meetings. The Zoning Board of Appeals is scheduled for Monday, February 2, at 5:30 p.m., and the Conservation Commission will meet on Monday, February 9, at 5:30 p.m. These meetings provide opportunities for community engagement and input on local matters.
