Anaheim Daily Brief: Disneyland meetups, police shooting claim, SR-91 closure, Ducks charity night
Anaheim, CA – February 27, 2026 – Weekend rallies near Disneyland, a new claim over a police shooting, SR-91 closures, and Ducks charity night.
Local headlines for Friday
1) Unofficial, dueling gatherings expected near Disneyland Saturday
Two outside groups say they plan separate, politically charged meetups tied to Disneyland on Saturday. One group plans a coordinated day inside the park as regular ticketed guests, while another says it will hold a counter-gathering outside the main entrance in the morning. Organizers have described both events as peaceful, and Disneyland has not been listed as an organizer or sponsor.
2) Family files claim over 2025 Anaheim police shooting
A family is seeking damages and policy changes following the September 15, 2025 shooting death of Rudy Martinez, who was shot by an Anaheim police officer near John Marshall Elementary School. Attorneys for the family say Martinez was in a mental health crisis and argue the officer should have used de-escalation or less-lethal options. City officials said the encounter unfolded quickly and described it as a fast-moving situation involving an immediate threat. The shooting remains under review by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, according to reports.
3) Major SR-91/Lakeview work brings a 55-hour closure window
Drivers who use SR-91 through Anaheim should brace for a 55-hour construction push tied to the SR-91 Improvement Project. Transportation officials say closures can begin as early as 9 p.m. Friday, February 27 and run to about 4 a.m. Monday, March 2, with additional restrictions at the Lakeview Avenue interchange. Lakeview Avenue itself is also scheduled for a full closure as early as 6 p.m. Sunday, March 1 through about 4 a.m. Monday. A new temporary signalized setup will shift how drivers access the westbound SR-91 straight on-ramp, and part of the Lakeview bridge walkway is slated to stay closed to pedestrians for months.
4) Ducks host ‘Go Orange for Orangewood’ night at Honda Center
The Anaheim Ducks are holding their annual ‘Go Orange for Orangewood’ night Friday against the Winnipeg Jets, with proceeds benefiting Orangewood Foundation and local foster and community youth. Planned elements include a pregame reception at ARTIC, fundraising sales inside the arena, and an auction tied to special theme jerseys.
