Virginia Beach-Area Gas Slips to $3.996 While Diesel Rises to $5.316

Regular gasoline and diesel moved in opposite directions in the latest AAA price check covering the Norfolk-Virginia Beach-Newport News metro area. The July 31, 2026, metro average put regular gas at $3.996 per gallon, while diesel rose to $5.316.

The AAA figures are a metro average, not a Virginia Beach-only station average. Pump prices can vary by station, neighborhood, fuel brand and time of day, so the July 31 snapshot should not be read as a real-time price at every local pump.

Regular gas slips, but remains higher over time

AAA listed regular gasoline at $3.996 per gallon, down 1.2 cents from the prior check and 6.1 cents from a week earlier.

The short-term decline has not erased the longer-term increase. Compared with one month earlier, regular gas is up 30.4 cents per gallon. Compared with one year earlier, it is up 89.4 cents.

For a driver filling a 15-gallon tank, the year-over-year difference works out to roughly $13.41 more per fill, before accounting for station-level price differences or changes in driving habits.

Diesel rises above $5.30

Diesel moved higher in the same AAA snapshot. The metro average reached $5.316 per gallon, up 0.5 cents from the prior check and 2.5 cents from the previous week.

The longer-term increases are larger. Diesel is up 44.5 cents from one month earlier and $1.667 from one year earlier.

That matters especially for contractors, delivery operators, service companies and other businesses that use diesel trucks or equipment. A 100-gallon refill at the latest metro average costs about $531.60, although actual commercial and retail prices may differ.

National comparison

The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s July 27 national data provides broader context, but it does not represent Virginia Beach prices. EIA reported U.S. regular gasoline at $4.096 per gallon and on-highway diesel at $5.313.

That puts the AAA metro gasoline average below the national gasoline figure, while the metro diesel average is nearly the same as the national diesel figure. The data sets use different geographic scopes and reporting schedules, so they should be treated as comparisons rather than identical measurements.

What the split could mean locally

For commuters and households, the small short-term decline in regular gas may provide limited relief at the pump, especially ahead of weekend driving. However, the monthly and yearly increases still leave routine trips, school-related driving, errands and longer travel more expensive than they were one month or one year earlier.

Diesel’s continued increase can affect operating costs for contractors, landscapers, home-service companies, delivery drivers and commercial fleets. Those costs may also factor into bids, delivery charges, service calls and prices for businesses that depend on frequent vehicle use. Restaurants and event operators can face indirect pressure when deliveries, equipment transport or vendor travel become more expensive.
