Virginia Beach Corrects Golf-Course Acreage Notice Before Aug. 11 Vote
Virginia Beach will re-advertise a public hearing on a proposal involving Virginia Beach National Golf Club after correcting the property’s advertised size from approximately 300 acres to approximately 350 acres.
The correction affects public notice for a pending decision involving restoration of the golf course and possible development of mixed housing types. The city says a second public hearing and City Council vote are projected for Aug. 11, 2026.
The acreage correction does not represent a final approval of housing construction or a completed sale. It changes the description of the property that residents are being asked to consider as the city moves through its public review process.
Why the notice is being reissued
The city’s original June 28, 2026 public-hearing notice described the property as approximately 300 acres. The city later corrected that figure to approximately 350 acres and said the hearing would be re-advertised to provide accurate notice.
That notice covers a proposal to restore Virginia Beach National Golf Course while also considering mixed housing types on the property. Because the acreage is part of how the proposal is publicly described, the correction gives residents an updated basis for reviewing the pending decision and participating in the hearing process.
The city says public engagement and formal rezoning hearings will remain part of the process. A Planning Commission listing also shows a public meeting concerning Virginia Beach National Golf Course scheduled for Aug. 6, 2026, at the Meyera E. Oberndorf Central Library.
What has happened so far
City officials say the City Council authorized a request for proposals after the city incurred capital expenditures related to the course and received unsolicited outside interest. The city’s timeline lists eight closed-session discussions concerning the course since 2024.
A public briefing occurred June 16, 2026. An earlier public hearing occurred July 7, 2026. The projected Aug. 11 hearing and vote would be the next major scheduled step identified by the city.
The sequence matters because the property is being considered through multiple stages rather than through a completed development decision. Public meetings, rezoning hearings and the council’s eventual action will determine how the proposal advances.
What remains unresolved
The city has not announced a final sale price or final development agreement. The exact number of housing units and the final site plan also remain unresolved.
That means the Aug. 11 date is a projected hearing and vote, not a completed action. Until the council acts and any required approvals move forward, the proposal remains under public consideration.
For residents, the immediate change is to the public notice itself: the property under discussion is approximately 350 acres, not approximately 300 acres. The re-advertised hearing is intended to give the public accurate information before the city considers the golf course’s future, possible housing development and related rezoning questions.
