Oxnard voters will decide Measure O renewal in November 2026

Oxnard voters will decide Nov. 3, 2026, whether to extend the city’s Measure O half-cent sales tax, after the Oxnard City Council voted June 16 to place the renewal on the ballot.

The proposed renewal would not increase the current tax rate. It would continue a locally controlled funding source the city says generates approximately $20 million each year for public safety, street maintenance and other local programs.

What voters are being asked to decide

Measure O was approved by 65% of Oxnard voters in 2008. The existing half-cent sales tax is scheduled to expire in March 2029. If voters approve the renewal, the city would continue collecting the same tax rate beyond that expiration date.

The city says the funding supports the Oxnard Police Department, Oxnard Fire Department and 911 emergency response. It also helps pay for street and alley maintenance, youth and senior services, homelessness response and disaster preparedness.

The renewal is still a proposal. It will not take effect based on the council’s vote alone, and the measure has not yet been approved by voters.

Why the decision matters for city services

According to the city, Measure O currently supports roughly $20 million in local programs and services each year. The city estimates that letting the measure expire would reduce annual local-service revenue by approximately that amount beginning in early 2029.

That makes the November vote a decision about whether Oxnard should maintain a dedicated, locally controlled source of money for services that include police and fire operations, emergency response, road and alley upkeep, programs for young people and older adults, homelessness efforts and disaster readiness.

The city also says Measure O has served more than 200,000 community members. The packet does not provide a breakdown of that figure by program or service, so the number describes the city’s overall reported reach rather than a separate count for each area of spending.

Oversight and ballot timeline

Under the proposed renewal, annual independent audits, public reporting and citizen spending oversight would continue. Those provisions are intended to keep the use of the locally collected revenue subject to ongoing review.

The City of Oxnard made ballot materials available for public examination through June 29, 2026. The council’s action was formally authorized through Resolution No. 16,071, adopted June 16.

The next major step is the Nov. 3 election. Oxnard voters will determine whether the city keeps the half-cent funding stream in place after the current Measure O authorization reaches its March 2029 expiration date.

The approved materials do not establish the positions of supporters or opponents as of Aug. 6, 2026. They also do not identify a separate campaign schedule or projected effect on individual household or business tax bills beyond stating that the proposed renewal would not increase the current tax rate.
