High Surf, Road Closure, and Police Investigation Shape Oxnard’s Friday Brief
Oxnard, CA — February 6, 2026 — High surf warnings along the coast, a sudden downtown road closure, and an ongoing police investigation are setting the tone for a busy Friday mo…
Coastal Hazards Raise Safety Concerns
A high surf advisory remains in effect along Ventura County beaches through Saturday evening, bringing waves well above typical levels for this time of year. Strong and unpredictable rip currents are expected, creating dangerous conditions for anyone entering the water.
City and county officials are urging residents and visitors to avoid swimming, surfing, or wading during the advisory period. Even experienced ocean users are being warned to stay out of the water, as conditions can change quickly. Rock jetties and harbor entrances are also areas of concern, where waves can break suddenly and with force.
Boaters are advised to use extra caution, particularly during peak swell periods, when harbor conditions may become rough and difficult to navigate.
Sinkhole Forces Closure of Major Intersection
A busy Oxnard intersection has been closed after crews discovered a sinkhole forming beneath the roadway. The issue was identified when water was found flowing below the surface, causing sections of asphalt to crack and buckle.
Out of an abundance of caution, city crews shut down the intersection while the extent of the damage is evaluated. No injuries were reported, and nearby buildings were not affected.
Drivers are being rerouted through surrounding streets, and traffic delays are expected in the area. Officials are encouraging commuters to allow extra travel time and to follow posted detours as repairs are planned and assessed.
Investigation Continues Into Weekend Shooting
Police continue to investigate a weekend shooting that occurred during a large gathering inside an abandoned commercial building in Oxnard. One young man was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others were transported to hospitals with serious injuries.
Detectives are actively working to identify those responsible and are asking the public for assistance. Anyone with firsthand information, photos, or video related to the incident is urged to come forward.
A reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest, as investigators continue to piece together the events surrounding the shooting.
School Schedule Reminders for Families
Several Oxnard schools are observing conference days today, resulting in minimum-day schedules for students. Families are encouraged to double-check campus communications and make pickup arrangements accordingly.
School officials remind parents and guardians to stay alert for updates from individual campuses, as schedules may vary.
