Oxnard’s 2026 City Council nomination period enters its final week
Oxnard’s nomination period for three City Council seats enters its final week, with candidates required to file nomination papers by 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2026.
The seats for Districts 1, 2 and 5 will appear on the city’s Nov. 3 general municipal election ballot. The regular filing deadline could be extended in an individual district, but only if that district’s incumbent does not file by the Aug. 7 deadline.
What is on the ballot
The three council seats carry four-year terms expiring in November 2030. The City of Oxnard’s election information identifies the Nov. 3 election date and lists the three district offices included in the 2026 municipal election.
The city’s election calendar provides for a conditional filing extension from Aug. 8 through 5 p.m. Aug. 12 under California Elections Code Section 10225. The extension is district-specific and is not automatic for all three races.
Whether an extension applies will depend on whether the incumbent in an affected district files by the regular deadline. The city has not indicated that an extension will occur.
Six people listed in July 28 activity roster
An official candidate activity roster updated July 28 lists six people who have pulled nomination papers:
- District 1: John Barrick and Bert E. Perello
- District 2: Gabriel Teran and Lizanne M. Nanez
- District 5: Gabriela Basua and Noemi Corpuz
The roster lists documents returned for Barrick in District 1 on July 28. It does not show qualification dates for any of the listed candidates.
Pulling nomination papers or returning documents is not the same as being qualified for the ballot. The roster is an activity snapshot, not a final list of qualified candidates. The final candidate field will depend on completed filings and the city’s review process.

People seeking to run must make an appointment with the Oxnard City Clerk’s Office to obtain and file nomination materials. The filing location is:

Because the regular deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 7, candidates should confirm appointment availability and filing requirements with the City Clerk before arriving. The city lists City Clerk appointments for obtaining and filing candidacy documents.
What happens after Aug. 7
If an incumbent in one of the three districts does not file by 5 p.m. Aug. 7, the filing period for that district may remain open through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12. The extension would apply only to the affected district and would not be available to the incumbent.
The city’s election calendar also sets a public-review period for candidate statements of qualifications and ballot designations after the regular filing period. If a district’s filing period is extended, a separate public-review period applies to materials filed during that extension.
What voters should watch next
Residents should watch for the city’s announcements identifying qualified candidates and any district-specific extension. The six names on the July 28 roster should not yet be treated as the final ballot lineup.
Residents who are not yet registered to vote have until Oct. 19, 2026, to register for the Nov. 3 election. The city’s election information and Ventura County’s elections authority provide later guidance on district verification, registration and ballot information.
