Palmdale District 5 council nomination deadline is Friday
Palmdaleโs nomination period for one City Council District 5 seat ends at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, setting the immediate deadline for candidates seeking a place on the cityโs Nov. 3, 2026, Consolidated General Municipal Election ballot.
The city is accepting filings for one District 5 councilmember position with a four-year term. Nomination documents became available July 13, beginning the filing period listed by the City of Palmdale.
For voters, Fridayโs deadline will determine which candidates can continue through the municipal election process. The available city notice does not provide a final list of filed candidates, so it does not establish whether the race is contested, uncontested or still developing.
Where candidates can file
Nomination documents are being handled through the Palmdale City Clerkโs Office at 38300 Sierra Highway, Suite C, in Palmdale. The filing location applies to registered voters residing in Palmdale who are seeking the District 5 seat.
The clerkโs office will be open Friday, Aug. 7, even though City Hall is normally closed on Fridays. That schedule gives candidates a designated in-person opportunity to submit documents before the regular 5 p.m. deadline.
The deadline is for the nomination period, not a final announcement of the candidate field. The cityโs filing record will be needed to determine who qualified and whether the District 5 race will appear as a contested election.
Possible extension to Aug. 12
District 5 could receive an additional five days if the incumbent does not file by 5 p.m. Friday. Under the cityโs notice, the affected districtโs nomination period would then remain open until 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
That extension is conditional. The source reviewed for this report does not establish whether the incumbent had filed by the Aug. 7 deadline, and it does not confirm that an extension will occur.
The city notice also says an office may be filled by appointment if statutory conditions are met and too few candidates are nominated. That is a provision in the election process, not a determination that District 5 will be filled by appointment.
What happens next
The scheduled general municipal election is Nov. 3, 2026. The immediate next step is the close of the regular nomination period at 5 p.m. Friday. If the incumbent has not filed, the possible extension would end at 5 p.m. Aug. 12.
After the applicable filing window closes, the candidate field will provide the clearest indication of how the District 5 contest will proceed. Until that record is available, claims about the competitiveness of the race or the possibility of an appointment remain unconfirmed.
The seat matters beyond the filing deadline because it is one of Palmdaleโs elected City Council positions. A City of Palmdale report describes the city as an active aerospace and economic-development center, providing broader context for the role of municipal leadership. The election notice, however, does not identify campaign issues, candidate priorities or specific policy consequences.
For residents, the practical dates are Aug. 7 for the regular deadline, Aug. 12 if the conditional extension applies, and Nov. 3 for the election itself.
