Palmdale District 5 candidate filing deadline is Friday
Potential candidates for Palmdale City Council’s District 5 seat have until 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, to file nomination papers for the city’s 2026 Consolidated General Municipal Election.
The filing outcome will determine whether the District 5 contest stays on its regular schedule or receives a possible five-day extension. The election for the single four-year seat is scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
Palmdale’s official election notice does not identify candidates who had filed as of Aug. 6. It also does not establish whether the race will be contested or uncontested.
Friday deadline and Clerk’s Office hours
The nomination period opened July 13 and normally closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 7. The City Clerk’s Office will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday solely to issue and accept nomination papers, according to the City of Palmdale.
Prospective candidates must file with the City Clerk’s Office at 38300 Sierra Highway, Suite C, in Palmdale. The notice specifically concerns the District 5 City Council seat, rather than an at-large council position.
The extended hours give candidates a defined final-day window to obtain and submit the required papers before the normal nomination period closes. The city’s notice sets the deadline at 5 p.m.; it does not say that documents can be filed after that time.
When the filing period could be extended
If the District 5 incumbent does not file nomination papers by the Aug. 7 deadline, the nomination period for that district may be extended through 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12.
That extension is conditional, not automatic. It depends on whether the incumbent files by Friday’s deadline. The official notice does not say whether the incumbent has filed, so it remains unknown whether the additional filing period will be used.
The filing count also matters because too few candidates could affect the steps available for filling the seat. The city has not announced that appointment procedures will be needed, and no such conclusion can be made until the filing deadlines and candidate filings are known.
What is at stake in November
District 5 voters will elect one council member to a four-year term on Nov. 3, 2026. The immediate question is whether enough eligible candidates file during the normal period or, if necessary, during the possible extension period.
For residents considering a run, Friday is the key deadline unless the city later confirms that the incumbent did not file and the District 5 period has been extended. For voters, the city’s eventual candidate list will establish who will appear on the municipal ballot and whether a District 5 election will proceed under the normal timetable.
Until then, the confirmed facts are limited: the normal nomination period began July 13, nomination papers are due by 5 p.m. Aug. 7, and a conditional extension could run until 5 p.m. Aug. 12. Palmdale’s municipal election remains scheduled for Nov. 3, 2026.
