Springfield adopts $1.04B FY27 budget, adds permitting, health staff
Springfield’s FY27 budget is now adopted at $1.04 billion, with school funding, online permitting upgrades and environmental health staffing.
Springfield’s City Council adopted the FY27 budget on May 28, locking in a $1.04 billion spending plan before the fiscal year begins July 1. The city says the plan was balanced without layoffs and without using stabilization reserves, which matters for residents and businesses watching city services, staffing and taxes.
Schools remain central
Education remains one of the biggest pieces of the plan. City officials say the FY27 budget continues support for Springfield Public Schools and keeps the city’s long-running school investment program moving forward, including the replacement of the German Gerena Community School.
Permitting moves online
Another priority is permitting. The budget funds OpenGov software so permits can be handled fully online, including electronic payments. The city says the change should reduce in-person paperwork and ease the burden on both residents and city staff.
Environmental health gets more capacity
The plan also expands the Division of Environmental Health in the Health & Human Services department and adds two community health workers. City leaders say that work covers inspections, sampling, monitoring, code enforcement and outreach tied to public health issues.
Residents keep pressing after the vote
The budget vote did not end the public discussion. At a June 1 public speak-out, residents pressed councilors on rent control, in-person meetings and a more transparent budget process. The next question is whether the new budget priorities translate into faster permitting, stronger public-health capacity and more follow-up on housing and transparency concerns.
